Marvel's Avengers: How to Beat the Scientist Supreme Villain Sector - CBR.com

Marvel's Avengers' latest villain sector features Monica Rappaccini, who can be difficult to defeat. Here are some strategies for surviving the fight.

BY NICHOLAS BROOKS

Since the game's launch, Marvel's Avengers has teased A.I.M.'s growing presence and threat, more specifically the growing power of the organization's Scientist Supreme, Monica Rappaccini. The game's initial story introduces her rise to power following the defeat of M.O.D.O.K. and how she grew A.I.M.'s hold around the world in a short amount of time. Both the Taking Aim and Future Imperfect DLC missions continue her story and reveal that there's more to Monica than meets the eye.

In the time travel-centric expansions, players learn that Monica from the future is actually working to prevent an invasion from the alien race known as the Kree, creating a powerful device known as the Cosmic Cube to give Monica god-like powers. However, what Monica doesn't know is that the cube's power will lead to her failure. The "Beating the Odds" villain sector follows the Avengers as they try to retrieve the cube from Monica and stop her before she creates an even greater catastrophe -- but this won't be easy for those who don't know what to expect.

How To Prepare

Before the mission begins, players must know the best ways to prepare. The villain sector is found in the Snowy Tundra map with a suggested power level of 140. While some players may be able to play with characters slightly below this, it's best to use characters that match or exceed the suggested level. Gear should focus on melee or ranged stats, as they will come in handy throughout the mission. Gamma and cryo effects will help immensely by dealing damage over time and slowing down foes, so look for gear and perks that boost these. It may seem tedious at first, but the right stats and perks make a world of difference when playing through the war zone.

The Best Heroes To Use

The first leg of the war zone is a race to find Monica by plowing through what looks like A.I.M.'s entire army. Next, players are led to a sub-facility and must fight their way through where the cube is being held. Once the containment unit is destroyed, the fight with Monica begins. While each hero has a decent chance of success, heroes with ranged skills will be best for getting through this mission quickly and efficiently without risking excessive amounts of damage to your team.

With that in mind, the best characters to use are the Hawkeyes, Thor, Iron Man and Black Widow. Out of these, Thor and Iron Man are the superior options, as they offer evasive maneuvers and radial attacks that hit multiple targets at once. If a player's strongest character isn't ranged, it's best to find online teammates with these abilities to compensate or build a strike team of these heroes to take the aggro off of whoever is playing.

How To Beat The Scientist Supreme

The four phases of Monica's boss battle pack a massive punch that can wipe out a team that isn't aware of how she operates. The arena is the product of Monica's reality-altering powers gained from the cube, and features Monica hovering in the middle with a hole below her along with a shield protecting her. The surrounding area is all square panels with intermittent pillars jutting from the ground. In her first phase, Monica attacks using clones and elemental avatars. The first avatar is electric, followed by gravity, then wind; the final phase feature all of them at once.

When facing the avatars, it's crucial to focus all attacks on them instead of the clones. When defeated, Monica will drop her shield for a massive attack. At this point, each hero should focus all firepower on her before the timer runs out. Otherwise, she will unleash a massive pulse that kills any team member not hiding behind a pillar. However, these pillars will eventually be destroyed, allowing Monica to wipe out the entire team in one hit.

This is why ranged heroes are the best choice for this fight, as Iron Man's rockets or Thor's hammer have the best chance of stopping Monica before she unleashes her big attack. While online may be unpredictable depending on who is on your team and whether or not they know when to focus their attacks on Monica, in single-player, stronger characters will be the safest option.

With all phases completed and her health low, Monica will fall into the hole below her, triggering a cutscene. "Beating the Odds" is the most engaging villain sector Marvel's Avengers has received yet. Instead copying the mechanics seen in previous villain sectors against Taskmaster and Abomination, "Beating the Odds" takes players to multiple areas and presents them against a villain that requires strategy to defeat. All of this is a good sign that future Villain Sectors may be equally as exciting.

Sony's PS5 redesign is much lighter – but does it look any different? - Creative Bloq

We just hope it'll be easier to get hold of.

By Daniel Piper

If you've managed to get anywhere near a PS5 in the last few months (no mean feat considering the console's popularity), you'll know that it's big. Very big. Ever since the machine was launched last year, its gargantuan size has been the subject of countless mocking memes. But a slightly more svelte PlayStation 5 could already be on the way.

As spotted by one Twitter user (below), tweaked PS5 manuals appear to confirm a new 'digital edition' model, which is a whole 300g lighter than the standard version. It isn't clear exactly how this weight loss will be achieved, but the arrival of a new model could be good news for anyone who hasn't managed to get hold of one yet (here's where to buy a PS5 if you fancy your chances).

It seems the new PS5, listed as CFI-1100B, will weigh around 3.6kg as opposed to the current model's 3.9kg. Not only that, but the new model will no longer require a screwdriver when adding or removing the stand. Hardly a groundbreaking design tweak, but hey – perhaps you've found yourself desperate to stand your PS5 up sans screwdriver.

Still, it'll be interesting to see if Sony has made any other design changes to shave off that 300g. We've already heard that the company is planning a redesign in an attempt to get stock moving again – a shortage of semi-conductors is behind delays to the production, and Sony is keen to "find maybe a secondary resource", or speed things up by "changing the design."

We can't help but hope Sony does take the opportunity to tweak the appearance of the PS5. Maybe it could take a cue from this wildly popular all-black PS5 mod. Or even this ridiculous water-cooled PS5. Whatever happens, anything that speeds up the production line is a good thing in our book.

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint Will Get A Tomb Raider Crossover Event For 20-Year Anniversary - GameSpot

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint will receive a plethora of new content throughout the rest of 2021, including a new Tomb Raider-themed treasure hunt event and Operation Motherland livestream.

By Jeremy Winslow

The online tactical shooter Ghost Recon: Breakpoint is poised to receive some new content in celebration of the franchise's 20-year anniversary, including a new crossover treasure hunt event themed around Tomb Raider.

The event is titled Relics of the Ancients and is connected to the 20-year anniversary content celebration, alongside an upcoming livestream revealing the Operation Motherland season. Neither have release dates, according to Ghost Recon's Twitter account, but are said to arrive this year.

Ubisoft allegedly teased Operation Motherland back in April 2021. Fans took to both Reddit and the company's official forum pages to post their speculative thoughts on what this could be, with some suggesting it might have something to do with CIA deputy director of operations Peter Miles. Others say it doesn't matter because Breakpoint is "dead on arrival."

In addition to the two headlining content additions, Ghost Recon: Breakpoint players can participate in various game-related events, like community contests, free giveaways, an anniversary showcase, and "more" throughout the rest of 2021. Similarly, none of these upcoming events have start dates.

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint received a hefty update in May that addressed the game's AI-controlled teammates. To make them more competent, players now have access to a progression loop, effectively making the AI suck less.

In other Ghost Recon-related news, Ubisoft has unveiled XDefiant, a free-to-play "punk rock" shooter that smashes together Tom Clancy properties like The Division, Ghost Recon, and Splinter Cell with live service elements.

OSG's Live Broadcast: The Division 2 - New York Playthrough

New Tom Clancy game reveal date, time and live gameplay for Ubisoft mash-up Battlecat - Express

 By Chris Capel

Last month, images of a new FPS called BattleCat coming from Ubisoft leaked, supposedly a mash-up of games such as The Division 2, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, and yes, Splinter Cell. While Ubisoft hasn’t stated that today’s new game is BattleCat, it is definitely an FPS, thanks to the clips it sent out to various outlets and influencers worldwide.

Ubisoft is getting ready to reveal a brand new first-person multiplayer shooter.

A brief gameplay teaser for the mysterious new game was posted by IGN over the weekend.

Little is known about the new first-person shooter, other than the fact that it's set within the 'Tom Clancy' universe.

Some fans believe it could be the long-rumoured Battlecat game, which brings together various Tom Clancy franchises in a competitive multiplayer arena.

The early gameplay teaser makes reference to The Division, while also confirming the FPS rumour.

Judging by the gameplay footage, Battlecat will feature similar objective-based gameplay to games like Overwatch, complete with unique character skills.

Fans can find out for certain when the new Tom Clancy game is revealed in full on July 19.

The official reveal takes place at 7pm BST UK time, although the live stream begins at 6.30pm.

You can watch the event live by clicking play on the YouTube embed below.

Ubisoft also teased the game on Twitter, telling fans that things are about to "get wild".

The tweet was accompanied by a party popper emoji, while the logo features your classic Tom Clancy soldier, only with a punk rock haircut.

It's likely the new game will contain extensive character customisation, most likely via an in-game shop and/or a Battle Pass.

Previous rumours have suggested the game will be free-to-play, so expect a Fortnite-style Season Pass system if this is the case.

The news comes just days after Ubisoft delayed Riders Republic and Rainbow Six Siege Extraction.

An evolution of Ubisoft's winter sports game Steep, Riders Republic has been given an October 28 release date.

Rainbow Six Extraction, meanwhile, has been pushed back until January 2022, having previously been pencilled in for September.

"The goal with the decision to delay both of these games is to give more opportunities for players to test, play firsthand and give feedback to ensure we are bringing the best experiences to market and allow them to reach their full potential," an Ubisoft spokesperson explains.

"We believe the new release schedules will allow us to achieve that goal. This is the right decision for our players and for the long-term performance of our games."

Battlefield 2042: release date, pre-orders, gameplay, and more - VG 24/7

 By Jessica Reyes

Battlefield 2042 joins the ranks of competitive first-person shooters with multiplayer warfare this fall. Contrary to its confusing name, it’s the next installment of Electronic Arts’ Battlefield series after Battlefield 5. You might know it as “Battlefield 6,” the name that never happened.

Battlefield 2042 takes place in a dystopian future where global warming has escalated to the point of unavoidable disaster. Political conflicts and economic fallout lead to a group of people called Non-Patriated (or No-Pats), whose countries have essentially ceased to exist. No-Pats have no affiliation attached to them, making them perfect hires for proxy wars.

Gear up for release day with everything you need to know about this upcoming shooter, whether you’re ready to pre-order or curious about the game as an FPS fan. Here’s what we know so far about Battlefield 2042.

Battlefield 2042 release date

Battlefield 2042 launches later this year on October 22, 2021 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Those who pre-order Gold and Ultimate Editions for PlayStation or PC can even access the game as early as October 15. Sorry Xbox fans, this isn’t an Xbox Game Pass launch day title.

Battlefield 2042 crossplay

Unfortunately, crossplay between platforms is still up in the air. Developers expressed interest but haven’t detailed any concrete plans on crossplay. DICE’s General Manager Oskar Gabrielson hinted that there would be more information about crossplay in the future.

Battlefield 2042 beta

All Battlefield 2042 pre-orders offer access to the open beta. Keep in mind that this isn’t the same as early access to the game, which is only for Gold and Ultimate Edition pre-orders for PlayStation and PC.

There’s no date for the open beta yet. However, there’s apparently an alpha test that’s exclusive to long-time Battlefield players handpicked by the game’s developer, DICE. This alpha test takes place in July, so expect the beta sometime after that.

Battlefield 2042 editions

Battlefield 2042 has three editions: Standard, Gold, and Ultimate. All of these have pre-order perks and additional DLC depending on the version. For example, as mentioned earlier, Gold and Ultimate offer early access for PlayStation and PC. Gold and Ultimate also offer additional cosmetics for customizing weapons and characters with their higher price points. Ultimate spoils fans with the most bonus content, including a digital artbook and soundtrack.

Battlefield 2042 pre-orders

Battlefield 2042 is available for pre-order at most of the major games and tech retailers that you’d expect. Here’s a few to get started for the Standard Edition:

  • Amazon (US)
  • GameStop (US)
  • Amazon (UK)
  • GAME (UK)
  • Smyths Toys (UK)

The Standard Edition costs $59.99 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions cost $69.99, presumably for higher performance costs. UK versions equate to about £54.99 and £64.99 respectively.

Check out our Battlefield 2042 pre-orders guide for even more listings, organized by your platform and edition of choice. We also include more detailed information about the perks that come with each edition.

Battlefield 2042 gameplay

Battlefield 2042 ditches single-player to focus on three multiplayer modes: All-Out Warfare, Hazard Zone, and one other mystery mode. Most game modes feature 128 players for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Unfortunately, because of technical limitations, this number cuts down to 64 players for last-gen consoles.

All-Out Warfare splits into two sub-modes: Conquest and Breakthrough. Both involve capturing certain points on the map, just in different ways. Conquest seems more set on challenging players to hold points. In contrast, returning game mode Breakthrough forces players into head-to-head battles and requires them to move across multiple sections.

Hazard Mode seems suspiciously similar to a battle royale, even though EA insists that there’s not going to be one. It’s hard to imagine that the company wouldn’t want to convert some of Call of Duty: Warzone or Fortnite’s fanbase with some kind of counter. If not battle royale, one of these modes might at least be a free-to-play experience.

EA promised more gameplay during EA Play on July 22. Before the main event, the company also plans to host five developer-led panels focused on different topics in gaming. First up is “The Future of First-Person Shooters” panel, which onlookers expect to feature Battlefield 2042 and Apex Legends.

God of War star Christopher Judge to voice Black Panther in Marvel's Avengers Wakanda expansion - Entertainment Weekly| Gaming

By Nick Romano

July 15, 2021 at 10:00 AM EDT

The Kratos actor and the War for Wakanda team talk about crafting a different version of T'Challa than Chadwick Boseman's iconic performance.

The late Chadwick Boseman has come to define mainstream culture's understanding of Black Panther. One can't think of T'Challa these days without acknowledging how the actor's 2018 movie role defined the character for generations of Marvel fans. Stargate's Christopher Judge, the man forever linked to the God of War gaming franchise as the booming voice of Kratos, understands this well. It's also why he had reservations about taking on Black Panther when a new opportunity presented itself.

Judge will voice King T'Challa in Marvel's Avengers video game from Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics, EW has learned exclusively. He will make his debut in War for Wakanda, the upcoming DLC story expansion coming this August.

"I turned it down straight away," Judge tells EW over Zoom about when he was first approached about the voice role. "There's many Black Panthers, but I really didn't believe that anyone should ever do T'Challa again [after Boseman]. The actual talks proceeded and, basically, I wound up doing it because my mother and my children said if I didn't do it, they would disown me." A bellow of laughter in his recognizably resonant timbre erupts at that thought.

"To be quite honest, I was fearful of being compared to what Chadwick had so wonderfully done," he continues. "The only way I could really wrap my head around it was to not even attempt a voice match, to let my performance stand on its own. I put all that into it and hopefully people like it."

"I want to double down on the idea that this is its own iteration of the Black Panther mythos," says Evan Narcisse, the writer behind Marvel Comics' Rise of the Black Panther who also came aboard War for Wakanda as a narrative consultant. "Even if you know the comics and can quote the movie by heart, there are still going to be some surprises."

Hannah MacLeod, the DLC's narrative lead who worked closely with Narcisse to craft this new story, believes the game's version of T'Challa is already distinct given his place within the context of Marvel's Avengers. A-Day, which was meant to celebrate the opening of the heroes' West Coast headquarters, kickstarted the game's main story when an attack resulted in the death of Captain America and the rise of Inhumans, including Kamala Khan. The DLC largely picks up five years after this event to see the ripple effects in Wakanda.

T'Challa's kingdom was in negotiations with Steve Rogers to ally with the Avengers, but with Cap's death brought a change of heart for the most technologically advanced nation on earth. They closed off their borders to the rest of the world once again. In the DLC, however, T'Challa has no choice but to enter the fray when the corrupt corporation A.I.M., headed by Monica Rappaccini, hires Ulysses Klaw to procure vibranium.

"[Klaw] has a personal vendetta against Wakanda that I don't want to spoil. It's different than the comics," teases MacLeod. "We'll say he has this sonic technology he developed that is used specifically to make vibranium tech vulnerable, but it also has this issue where it causes corruption in vibranium. That corrupt vibranium is starting to sprout all over the earth, which is why the Avengers get involved."

Judge's iteration of Black Panther is in a different place than we typically see of the character. "He's older and a little bit more wisened," MacLeod says. "We're not coming into T'Challa's story at the beginning. He hasn't just lost his father. He hasn't just become king. He's been in this role for a while."

Narcisse describes him in relation to Boseman's version. "Chadwick's performance was somebody who had more questions about how to perform the role of Black Panther and king. This version doesn't have those questions," he says. "He already thinks he has all the answers. I think one of the cool things in this expansion is there's tension between him and Shuri" — his tech-savvy sister — "like we haven't seen before about how best to move Wakanda forward."

War for Wakanda adds a new single-player mission that brings the length of the total campaign to more than 25 hours. There will be new adversaries (including two central villains), what MacLeod calls "a robust cast of Wakandans" (like the Dora Milaje and sorcerer Zawavari), locations (like Shuri's laboratory and the Wakandan War Room), and new missions for the Drop Zone and Threat Sector.

The Rise of the Black Panther was a big influence on this story, if you hadn't already guessed from Narcisse's involvement. Dancing around spoilers, MacLeod mentions how those comics tell "so much about T'Challa's history and his family."

"We really wanted that focus on family but [also] potential conflicts in family," she notes. "If your family doesn't all have the same goals anymore, what does that look like?"

Because of COVID-19, Judge was already in the process of transforming his home office in Los Angeles into an at-home recording studio. What started with piling couch cushions on the walls to dampen the sound now comes complete with his own V.O. booth. Surrounded by photos of those who've inspired him (Frederick Douglas, Maya Angelou, Nelson Mandela, the Obamas, to name a few), as well as projects he's worked on (there may be a God of War poster in his collection), Judge recorded the entirety of his work on Marvel's Avengers from this space, which presented its own challenges "not being able to physically interact with anyone else."

He worked with Beth McGuire, the dialect coach on the Black Panther movie, to find the Wakandan accent for the game. She "gently coerced" Judge, as he puts it, into adopting a higher-pitched speaking voice for the part than he's typically used to. ("I have the ultimate respect for true voiceover actors because they have a catalog of voices. I pretty much just have this," he jokes of his deep voice.) Not only that, together they explored for "probably a month" T'Challa's "relationships and what those meant to him."

Judge was particularly struck by the timeliness of the story at the heart of War for Wakanda. "What do you owe other people as a technologically advanced nation?" he asks. "How much aid do you give to others? How much do you involve yourself in others' conflicts?" In a year when "we all were going through unprecedented times," he says there were also things "going on emotionally that I was able to tap into."

"There were days when…" He goes silent for moment. Tears begin to well up. "...things had gone on in the country, world, specifically Chadwick's passing." Boseman died unexpectedly at the age of 42 in August 2020 from colon cancer, a condition he kept from the public. "We just talked," Judge says of game's crew. "We didn't record the full session because there was so much hurt. The ability to talk to people who I've never met, I've never met them face to face, it's all been over Zoom. To have just conversations when conversations were tough, if not impossible to have after some things, uh, was a real lifeline, it really was. To be able to tap into other's frame of reference was really important through a lot of this process."

Judge, Narcisse, and MacLeod will talk further about their experiences working on the War for Wakanda expansion and answer fan questions this Friday starting at 10 a.m. PT on a special Twitch livestream hosted by Crystal Dynamics.

Quotes have been edited for length and clarity.

Correction: An earlier version of this article misstated that the War for Wakanda DLC brings a story campaign that runs more than 25 hours. The DLC will instead extend the overall content of Marvel's Avengers to more than 25 hours.
